Synopsis

Act One
Night. Leporello, the servant, is keeping watch for his master, Don Giovanni, who has snuck into the Commendatore's house to seduce his daughter, Donna Anna. Leporello's grumbling is interrupted by Donna Anna's screams – she has chased her attacker and is trying to identify him. The noise brings the Commendatore out, and he challenges Don Giovanni to a duel. The brief encounter ends with the old man's death. Donna Anna and her fiancé, Don Ottavio, plot revenge.

Meanwhile, Leporello tries to make his master see the moral implications of his behaviour. However, Don Giovanni has now set his sights on another beautiful woman – Donna Elvira. She has come from Burgos to find Don Giovanni, who promised to marry her, seduced her, and then disappeared. Don Giovanni leaves her in the care of Leporello, who tries to console her by explaining that she is neither the first nor the last woman he has abandoned, and shows her a long list of his other victims.

Meanwhile, Don Giovanni comes across a young couple: Zerlina and Masetto. They are hurrying along with their guests to celebrate their wedding. Don Giovanni invites everyone to his palace except Zerlina, whom he dazzles with his promises. However, his plan is thwarted by Donna Elvira. Zerlina runs off and Don Giovanni is confronted by Donna Anna and Don Ottavio, who ask him to help them seek revenge. Donna Elvira reappears and warns them not to trust the deceiver. Don Giovanni tries to convince his friends that Donna Elvira has gone mad with love for him, but his excuses are unconvincing. However, as soon as he leaves, Donna Anna realises that the voice of her assailant, who broke into her room, was that of Don Giovanni. She urges Don Ottavio once again to seek revenge.

Don Giovanni hurries to his palace, where a group of merry revellers have gathered. He orders his servants to lavishly entertain the guests and invite everyone passing by to the ball and masquerade. Among the guests are Donna Anna, Donna Elvira and Don Ottavio, who are disguised and intend to expose Don Giovanni.

Once again, Don Giovanni tries to approach Zerlina, but she screams and, in the end, Leporello is blamed for everything. The revengers surround Don Giovanni, accusing him of the crime. Just as help seems to appear from nowhere, the accused manages to escape and runs off.

Act Two
Don Giovanni has found a new target: Donna Elvira's young maid.  He intends to serenade her, but, not wanting to be seen by the approaching Donna Elvira, he swaps clothes with Leporello, forcing him to distract the woman and lead her away. As soon as the pair are out of sight, Don Giovanni performs the serenade, accompanied by a mandolin.

Meanwhile, Leporello is captured by Donna Anna, Don Ottavio, Masetto and Zerlina.  The terrified servant only manages to escape by revealing his identity. This ruse further enrages the revengers. Only Elvira is torn between love and revenge.

A bewildered Leporello meets his master in the graveyard. The latter is in high spirits and recounts his adventures to his servant. Suddenly, a sinister warning is heard: his laughter will be short-lived. Don Giovanni discovers that the statue of the Commendatore has been defiled, so he orders Leporello to invite the old man to dinner. The statue suddenly nods in assent.

Donna Elvira makes one last attempt to bring her former lover to his senses, but to no avail. Don Giovanni is dining and is completely uninterested in her admonitions. Donna Elvira leaves the palace and suddenly lets out a dreadful scream. The Commendatore enters through the gates. His demand is clear: repentance or the fires of hell. Don Giovanni remains unflinching, but is soon engulfed by hell, accompanied by the terrifying roar of demons.

The avengers return once more, but this time they find only a dreadfully frightened Leporello. As for Don Giovanni, he has been swept away by the fires of hell. The villain has been punished, so everyone can now carry on with their lives as before.
