In May 1870 Verdi finally consented to write an opera specifically for Cairo, on an Egyptian theme: Camille Du Locle, a close friend since the days they had collaborated on Don Carlos in Paris, had sent him a scenario based on a synopsis written by Auguste Mariette, a French Egyptologist in the service of the Khedive.

Opera in four acts with one interval to an Italian libretto by Temistocle Solera, based on the biblical story and the play by Anicet-Bourgeois and Francis Cornu. First performance took place on 9 March 1842 at the Teatro Alla Scala, Milan.

Opera in three acts with two intervals. Libretto by Antonio Somma (after the libretto "Gustave III ou Le bal masqui" by Eugene Scribe). First performed 17th February, 1859 at the Teatro Apollo, Rome. Premiere in Tbilisi: 8th February, 1862. We present a 1986 production (Conductor - Jansug Kakhidze, Director - Mikheil Tumanishvili, Set and Costume Design - Giorgi Alexi-Meskhishvili).

Opera in 3 acts with 2 intervals. Libretto by valerian Gunia. Premiere in Tbilisi in 1923 on the 23th of December. A new production was realized in 1977 by Zurab and Jemal Andjaparidze. We present a 1977 production (Conductor - Didim Mirtskhulava, Director - Alexander Tsutsunava, Set and Costume Design - Ivane Askurava, Choreographer Iliko Sukhishvili).
