The Chorus and the opera company of Z. Paliashvili Tbilisi Opera and Ballet State Theatre were established in the 1850's and has always been staffed with singers of best vocal and artistic skills. The Chorus is the effective nucleus o f the company, which apart from opera performances participates in Gala-concerts and other vocal-symphonic pieces.

The Chorus made its debut abroad in the 1970s. In 1974 the Tbilisi Opera company performed in Zakaria Paliashvili's operas "Abesalom and Eteri" and "Daisi" at the Cultural Days of Georgia in Saarbruken (Germany) on the stage of the local opera. Under the baton of Givi Azmaiparashvili Otar Taktakishvili's "Mindia" was performed at the first night. In 1984 the Chorus participated in the tour of Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre at the Moscow Bolshoi theatre. They performed in Zakaria Palishvili's operas "abesalom and Eteri" and "Daisi"; In Musorgsky's "Boris Godunov", In Mozart's "Don Giovanni", in Vedi's "Il Trovatore" in Bidzina Kvernadze's "And it was in the eighth year", Giya Kancheli's "Music for living" (conducted by Jansugh Kakhidze, and Didim Mirtskhulava). In 1985 during the company's tour the Chorus took part in "Music for living" at Minsk Opera Theatre. In 1990 during the tour of the theatre Company the Chorus performed on the stages of Duisburg, Gelzenkirchen, Levenkuzen (Germany) presenting Prokofiev's "The Fiery Angel", Giya Kancheli's "Music for living" and also participated in the Gala-concerts there. In 1992 the Chorus took part in the open air Gala-concert in Buseto and also performed in Verdi's "Othello" "Abesalom and Eteri (under Jansugh Kakhidze's baton). In 1994 the Chorus took part in the tour of Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre in Malta, where they performed in Puccini's "Madama Butterfly". In 2004 the Chorus participated in the theatre tour in Israel where they performed in Viktor Dolidze's "Keto and Kote" at Rishon LeZion Opera Theatre in Israel. Recent years have been especially significant in the Chorus biography. On May 10, 2005 the Chorus participated in the celebration dedicated to the visit of the US President George Bush in Freedom Square in Tbilisi where they performed the National anthems of Georgia and the USA together with other Georgian choruses. The Chorus of Tbilisi Opera and Ballet State Theatre was the nucleus of the event. The Chorus often participates in various events and Gala-Concerts. Distinguished was the first night of Verdi's "Requiem" at Tbilisi Opera an Ballet State Theatre in 2006 (conducted by Zaza Azmaiparashvili - the Theatre's artistic director and chief conductor. In the same year the Chorus toured in dalhalla, where together with the Theatre Company it participated in the most famous Opera Music Festival in Sweden, where they performed in Verdi's "Il Trovatore" and Saint- Saens "Samson and Delilah". In April, 2008 the Opera Company: orchestra, the Chorus and soloists performed in Laoncavallo's "pagliacci" in Jerusalem, Herzelia and Rishon LeZion (Conductor - Zaza Azmaiparashvili and Gogi Chichnadz, Stage Director - Davit Sakvarelidze). On May 14, 2008 Under the leadership of Den Etinger Musical Director and principal Conductor of Rishon LeZion Symphonic Orchestra, the Orchestra, Chorus and soloists of Tbilisi Opera Theatre: Mishelina Kobaliani, Elena Putilova, Giorgi Makharadze and Legi Imedashvili performed in Verdi's "Requiem". After the concert it was decided to invite the soloists and the Chorus to the Jubilee of Rishon LeZion Orchestra to perform in Verdi's "Requiem". The Rich Repertoire of the Chorus includes operas by Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Donizetti aswell as by Russian and Georgian composers; also vocal-symphonic pieces such as Bach's "High Mass", "St. Matthew Passion", Mozart's "Requiem", Verdi's "Requiem", Gia Kancheli's "Styx". The Chorus was always directed by renowned choir masters and conductors, the most distinguished among them were Givi Munjishvili and Tengiz Sanaia, who carried out their activities at the Theatre in the 1970s. Special mention should be made of the chorusmaster and conductor Ian Dumin, whom the artistic director Jansugh Kakhidze invited from Riga Opera theatre in 1982. Today the principal chorusmaster of the Chorus is Avtandil Chkhenkeli, the chorusmaster is Shalva Shaorshadze.
