Liana Kalmakhelidze Liana Kalmakhelidze sang her first opera role Maro in Zakaria Paliashvili’s Daisi at the age of 17, being a second year student at the Telavi Niko Sulkhanishvili Music College. Her partner was the famous singer Batu Kraveishvili. After that performance the composer Sulkhan Tsintsadze gave her recommendation to continue her studies at the Academic Singing Faculty of the Tbilisi State Conservatoire. She studied there under Yulia Paliashvili. During her student years Liana Kalmakhelidze appeared in the Conservatoire Opera Studio productions as Adina (Gaetano Donizetti’s E’lisir D’amore); Violetta (Giuseppe Verdi’s La traviata); Guilda (Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto); Musetta (Giacomo Puccini’s La Boheme); Maro (Zakharia Paliashvili’s Daisi). In 1975 Liana Kalmakhelidze made her debut as Maro at the Tbilisi Z. Paliashvili State Opera and Ballet Theatre. In 1976-1977 she was an intern in the Teatro Alla Scala, Milan, where she prepared several parts under the supervision of the famous Ettore Campogalliani, Renato Pastorino and Antonio Beltran. During the internship she took part in the concerts at La Sala Verdi; La Piccola Scala and San Fedele Opera. She sang Musetta (Giacomo Puccini’s La Boheme) in Parma and Busetto Verdi Festival.

After returning from Italy the singer continued working at the Tbilisi State Opera Theatre. She held solo concerts in different countries as well: the recital of Georgian and Italian music in Wiesbaden, together with the Wiesbaden Symphonic Orchestra under Siegfried Köhler (1978); Recitals at the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre and Moscow Hall of Columns (1983); the annual concerts in StPetersburg, Mariinsky Opera and Ballet Theatre and the Glinka Small Philharmonic Hall in 1985-1989; recital at Moscow State Conservatoire Sergei Rachmaninov Hall in 1989. In 1995 Liana Kalmakhelidze  had a concert at the Cairo Opera House and gave master classes for the soloists. In St. Petersburg and Tbilisi she organized and performed monographic concerts of Mozart, Rossini, Dimitri Arakishvili.

In 1984 Liana Kalmakhelidze took part in the tours, organized by Djansugh Kakhidze, Mikheil Tumanishvili and Robert Sturua, in the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre. The singer appeared as Maro (Paliashvili’s Daisi) and Zerlina (Mozart’s Don Giovanni). She toured with the Tbilisi Opera Theatre in Israel (2003), sang in Victor Dolidze’s Keto and Kote (as Keto) and at the Gala Concert.
Apart from singing, Liana Kalmakhelidze teaches the art of vocal at the Z. Paliashvili Central Music School.
