Zaza Azmaiparashvili graduated from the Choral Conducting Department of the V. Sarajishvili Tbilisi State Conservatoire in 1985 and completed his postgraduate degree in Opera and Symphonic Conducting at the St. Petersburg N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatoire in 1991 under Yuri Temirkanov. During his studies he conducted Gounod's FAUST and Tchaikovsky's EUGENE ONEGIN.

From 1985 to 2004 Zaza Azmaiparashvili became a conductor of the Georgian Radio and TV Symphony Orchestra and toured to Turkey, Italy and Spain. Since 1991 he has been a Full Professor at the Opera Department of Tbilisi State Conservatoire.

In 1995 the conductor was awarded the second prize and became a laureate of the 2nd International Prokofiev Conducting Competition (the first prize was not awarded). In 1997-1998 Zaza Azmaiparashvili was invited to conduct Verdi's operas LA TRAVIATA and IL TROVATORE at the Moscow Bolshoi Theater.

In 1998, he conducted AIDA at the BRAVO International Opera Festival founded by the famous Georgian singer Paata Burchuladze.

In 2001, Zaza Azmaiparashvili was invited to Lleida, Spain to conduct Mascagni's CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA at the Teatre Principal. The following year he moved to the Tbilisi Z. Paliashvili Opera and Ballet State Theatre and conducted Verdi's MACBETH there.

From 2004-2009 Zaza Azmaiprashvili was Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre. Under his direction Verdi’s AIDA, IL TROVATORE, ATILLA, Leoncavallo's PAGLIACCI and Taktakishvili's MINDIA were performed. He prepared and successfully conducted IL TROVATORE and SAMSON ET DALILA by Saint-Saëns at the Dalhalla International Opera Festival (Sweden).

In 2003-2004 he collaborated with the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra (Moscow) and conducted many concerts with various soloists, including Eliso Virsaladze.  In 2008 he toured twice to Israel with the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theater.

In 2014-16 he was an honorary conductor of the Tbilisi Opera, and since 2016 Maestro Azmaiparashvili has been chief conductor of the same theater. His repertoire in these years includes: Verdi's MACBETH, DON CARLO, SIMON BOCCANEGRA, BALLO IN MASHCERA, LA FORZA DEL DEL DESTINO, Puccini's TURANDOT, Donizetti's L'ELIZIR D'AMORE, Massenet's WERTHER, Paliashvili's ABESALOM AND ETERI.

Zaza Azmaiparashvili has performed 28 opera premieres. Since 1980, all stars of Georgian opera (Paata Burchuladze, Zurab Sotkilava, Makvala Kasrashvili, Tsisana Tatishvili, Badri Maisuradze, George Gagnidze, Lado Ataneli, etc.) have worked with him, as well as world-renowned artists such as: Elena Obraztsova, Alessandra Marc, Simon Estes, Ferruccio Furlanetto, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Christian Johanson, Andrea Rost, Michèle Crider, Dolora Zajick, Ambrogio Maestri, Gegham Grigoryan, Marcello Alvarez, etc.
