Collaboration between famous contemporary choreographer Jiri Kylian and Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theater ballet company began in 2008. That year, company presented Kylian’s two ballets
Stepping Stones and
Sechs Tänze. The following year one more ballet performance-
Falling Angelswas staged. This was the first case choreographer to collaborate with former post-soviet ballet company, which was largely due to the partnership of Kylian and Nina Ananiashvili. Partnership with choreographer continued for years. In 2013 another premiere was held-
Petite Mort. Due to reconstruction activities at Opera Theatre, the performances took place at Griboedov theater stage; nevertheless, the premiere was a great success. In order to present Jiri Kylian’s program comprehensively in theater’s repertoire, in 2015, assistant of the choreographer and teacher-coach Patrick Delcroix, together with the staging team, presented one more ballet at Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre -
Sarabanda. Ballet is based on the music of Johann Sebastian Bach (partita # 2 in D minor, "Sarabanda" (BWV 1004) ; electronic arrangement by Dick Heuff.
In this one-act ballet Jiri Kylian searches for answers to the children’s basic question "Why?". Simple structures, banal situations, visions
ofdreamlike episodes, sudden memories, fragmented moves of dance and pantomime - all together are “ingredients” of his choreography and question deliberately remains unanswered.
Dress rehearsal of
Sarabande held on November 28, 2015 at renovated Opera Theater stage. Premiere will be presented on May 14, 2016 together with Kylian’s other ballets.
